4 Tips for Traveling on a Budget

Need a vacation, but on a tight budget? Traveling doesn’t have to be expensive with the right planning well ahead of you taking that much-needed vacation.

It all starts with creating your travel budget. You may find it helpful to start a travel savings account. Set up an automatic transfer at regular intervals so your savings can add up over time.

We also have our top 3 tips for helping you stretch your traveling dollars further:

1) Be flexible and plan in advance.

Being open to different destinations or dates can land you significant discounts on flights and accommodations. Popular destinations can be cheaper and less crowded during their off-peak or “shoulder” seasons. Use price comparison websites to set up fare alerts to get the best prices, and book early.

2) Make your credit card work for you.

Frugal travelers know how to get the best bang for their buck. Check on the features of your credit card to know what benefits are available. If you travel frequently, you may want to choose a card that has great travel incentives. Alternately, a cash-back rewards card could help your travel budget go further.

3) Opt for cost-effective accommodations and transportation.

Save money and experience a taste of local life by using public transportation. Choose a budget-friendly place to stay (though don’t forget to check reviews first). Many lodging options have a kitchen, so cooking your own meals can be another great way to save money while traveling.

4) Enjoy free activities.

Explore your destination through budget-friendly activities like visiting the locals parks, museums, and attending public events.

By planning ahead and sticking to your travel budget, it may make for a less stressful trip when it comes to all the spending you plan to do. But remember, you’re on vacation so be sure to enjoy every penny you worked hard to save.
